Limited Control

A Companion to the Jim Jarmusch Resource Page

On record #2

q: why is jim jarmusch on the new album cover?

a: he asked the same thing...because he is punk. he deserves a little praise. if he got the cover of time magazine, all of those copies would end up in the dump.

The cover of The Brian Jonestown Massacre cd "Bravery Repetition and Noise", released in 2001, boasts a photo of Jim Jarmusch, taken by Tricia Vessey. (The Brian Jonestown Massacre's "Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth" off the album Give It Back! (1997) later appeared on the soundtrack to Broken Flowers.)

And then he turned and tipped one over
Under a spitshine western sky
The color of boot varnish
Hey, it's like Fellini!
Actually I'm thinkin' more like Jim Jarmusch

The Spanish connection

The news on The Limits of Control are still very scarce.

And curiously, the few related snapshots that have cropped up on the web, mostly on Flickr and various blogs (among which the one below, by Flickr user "Left Hand Rotation" - - looks to be the most revealing) all seem to stem either from a few days in September 2007, when Jim Jarmusch appears to be scouting for locations in Madrid, Spain, or from early February 2008, on the set in Madrid.

Please drop me a line if you come across anything else. I will of course post any news here as soon as I catch it.

Meanwhile, here is what Jim Jarmusch has revealed in the past, presumably regarding The Limits of Control

In a 2004 (post Coffee and Cigarettes) interview with Fredrik Johansson in Swedish magazine Stick (http://www.stick.se/), Jim Jarmusch mentioned his future film projects:

JJ: I'm just preparing to begin shooting one project this fall [Broken Flowers], and I have another one that I would like to make next year. I'd like to speed up the tempo, I've been too slow these last years for several reasons. The next two films I'd really like to finish in the next two and a half years.
FJ: Would you want to do like Warren Zevon, and try to make one last film during your last months alive?
JJ: Yes, I would. There's a film that I've carried with me for ten years now. It's not the next film I'll be doing, but the one after that. And it's very important for me to get it made. If I'd find out that I had only more year to live, I'd drop everything and start working with it immediately.

And in an interview the same year with David Noh of Film Journal International (http://www.filmjournal.com/filmjournal/filmmakers/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000692688), there was this exchange:

FJI: I hope it won't be too long before your next film.
JJ: I just finished a script four days ago and have another one half done. As soon as I finish doing the press for this, I'm going to finish it and want to shoot the first one in the fall. I want to have two projects ready to go, which I've never had before; I'm like single cell. They're very different, but they're not episodic in any way. One's a road movie and the other's kind of a semi-road movie. But I don't want to talk about them, don't want to jinx them.

A blog called "The Playlist" has uploaded a number of mp3-collections called The Playlist Soundtrack Series. Volume 2 is called "If I were Jim Jarmusch", and includes music by artists whose music has been featured in Jarmusch's films, and tunes which The Playlist deems appropriately Jarmuschian.

Now open: The Jim Jarmusch Resource Page Forum

I've set up a forum to accompany the Jim Jarmusch Resource Page. Feel free to use it any way you wish, to ask questions, to answer them, to voice your opinions, to spread news etc. I've suggested a few categories in the forum outline, but you can use the "General" board for any topics which don't fit in any of the categories. Please note that this is my first attempt at creating a forum, I'm sure there are some bugs and annoyances, which I hope to be able to iron out in due time.

Infomercial #3

/knocking on wood

So, I've finally updated the Jim Jarmusch Resource Page...!

Significant changes:

Updated info! - Including, at long last, Coffee and Cigarettes, Broken Flowers, The Limits of Control, among many other things

Updated/deleted dead links! I've also put more stuff directly on the site, so as not to be as dependent on the upkeep of other sites.

New design! Nothing fancy, no frills, but a new look all the same, hopefully a little easier to navigate. Should at least be a lot easier for me to update.

No more annoying banner ads! No ads at all! Well: the site is essentially a non-profit web project - I've done it all for free, and I'm not expecting to get any money from the site (actually it's costing me: time, and money for web hosting, domain registering etc), and I don't want ads loitering the site. There's not even a "Donate" button anywhere. (If anybody feels grateful, feel free to simply drop me a line saying so :) However, as is more or less common practice, I've added links, some of these so called "referral" links, to online retailers wherever such info is relevant, and also set up some affiliated storefronts for convenience's sake (see the About page), which would give me a small referral percentage, if anybody cares to use them. (Please care ;)

New domain name! The new url is http://www.jim-jarmusch.net

At the moment the site should be regarded very much as a 1.0 release (or 2.0 to be more exact), i.e. it's still pretty rough around the edges and I am sure some things remain to cleaned up, or slightly redesigned before it's as smooth as it should be. Also, there are still some things I know I'll want to add, and there's bound to be other changes or additions that the site could benefit from.

I am in charge of the site, but it lives and breathes through the help and contribution of a whole community of people. Please do keep the input coming! Report errors, make wishes. And, for instance, if anyone has written a paper discussing Jarmusch's films, or if you have an interesting piece of news (or trivia), or perhaps suggestions on articles or interviews etc, please don't hesitate to let me know. Also, feel free to bring forward any ideas on how I could improve the site, or on what more you would like it to offer. Copyright-wise, the site is in a pretty grey area, as much of what I've posted (and YouTube videos I've linked to, which I haven't uploaded, btw) hasn't been cleared for copyright. If you find something of yours on this site, be aware that I try to credit everybody as accurately as I can (and add links to whatever sites I've "borrowed" something from). Please don't hesitate to contact me: I'll be glad to make any changes you might wish for. I obviously won't be quite as glad if you demand I remove something that I don't own the copyright for, but I will certainly comply!

Soundtracks of the 80's

This is probably a rather grey area, but then again I am - honestly! - just the messenger: in an anonymous comment to this blog post you'll find an interesting link:
